Counting Calories?
"During menopause many women feel under pressure to keep the weight off and keep referring to counting calories in midlife. But it’s time to ditch the scales and embrace a healthier, less stressful approach to nutrition."
Why is counting calories so harmful:
1. Stress - During menopause there are many hormonal changes happening in our bodies that are already stressful enough for us to deal with. Adding calorie counting to this can cause even more hot flushes, mood swings, trouble sleeping and more.
As we know stress is a major trigger to weight gain and excess belly fat. Therefore you may be losing weight from counting calories but while counting calories causing yourself added stress which can actually add weight back on due to stress.
Stress is counterproductive leading to what we don’t want, and that’s belly fat.
2. Metabolic changes – As we approach menopause and beyond our metabolism changes. That said, the quality of food that we eat 'V' the quantity is extremely important for us as midlife women. Counting calories often means that you aren’t looking closely enough at the nutrients that your body needs and are generally more focused on the calorie content of that ready meal or snack, which is typically processed and full of those ingredients we DON'T want to be putting into our bodies.
What can YOU do instead of counting calories?
1. Eat whole foods – Consume fresh food, proteins and heathy fats with every meal.
2. Practice mindful eating – Eat when you are hungry and stop when you are full. Don’t overeat.
3. Balanced Meals – Make sure each meal includes protein, healthy fats and complex carbohydrates. This will keep energy levels high and maintain bloody sugar levels.
4. Stay hydrated – Keep hydrated so that you aren’t eating unnecessarily, sometimes the feeling of hunger is in fact thirst!
5. Exercise – Staying active, a daily walk, light exercise with weights for strength will help manage your weight.
6. Manage stress levels – meditate, read a book, spend time with loved ones. What ever helps you to relax.
